Recreational competitors are getting the chance to win A$1m when they take on tennis' top professionals - headed by leading player the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point before the Australian Grand Slam

Organizers of the year's first Grand Slam have unveiled the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will pit 10 amateur players against 22 professionals in a knockout tournament at the tournament grounds

How the Event Will Work

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to establish who gets to serve or return, and whoever wins the point will advance to the subsequent phase

The winner of the event will earn £490,000

By comparison, players who made it to the final four of the primary tournaments in the previous year's tournament won A$1.1m

Past Similar Events

The American Grand Slam organized a redesigned, separate mixed doubles tournament in late summer which encouraged top singles players to participate, with the champions receiving $1m

The year's first major held its debut One Point Slam in the current season, but the prize fund was a smaller amount and it received minimal attention

Andrey Rublev was the sole elite competitor involved, and his progress came to an end when he put the one and only serve allowed into the net in his penultimate round

Tournament Information

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will work, but it is projected to mirror a comparable structure to the previous version

The elite players will be granted to serve once and the everyday players on two occasions - as is the usual procedure in traditional tennis

While it is unclear how the bracket will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the site will be the main stadium rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The concluding rounds will occur in a nighttime schedule instead of early afternoon

Participation Information

Any Australians - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the governing body - can compete in 'quick-match event' tournaments at their neighborhood facilities

The victors of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a selection process, with an everyday competitor from every region and area picked to participate in the 'final competition' in a night session on the specified date

There will also be a preliminary competition in late year which non-professionals, lower ranked pros, celebrities and sport stars can participate in

It starts on the starting date and the pair of champions will qualify for the following day's 'final showdown' with the remaining non-professionals and 10 professionals

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the final champion will receive the reward. Applications will open soon at facilities nationwide"

Event organizers said there were "more big names to be announced soon", while the tournament site said "famous personalities" would be involved
