Zak Crawley – One

Expected in Australian conditions however managed only the fourth duck in both innings from an England opener facing only a handful of deliveries.

Ben Duckett – 5

Made beginnings during each knock. His dismissal on Saturday marked the point when it began to unravel for England.

Pope – 6

Seems improved for technical tweaks. The first Test of a series is usually his strongest, after which his form dips. The team need him to kick on.

Joe Root – 1

Miles off that first hundred in Australia. The side need the nous from their star performer if they are to come back from this defeat.

Brook – Five

His fifty during the initial knock was skittish, but valuable. Poor shot in the follow-on.

Stokes – 6

Came back from injury with a five-for, but appeared out of touch with the bat. Lost control in the field against Head's aggressive batting.

Jamie Smith – Four

Could have the skills for Australia, yet must to improve. Will likely face plenty of bouncers going forward.

Atkinson – 5

Part of the impressive English first-innings bowling effort and attempted to carry the fight with the bat later on. Among the attack that fell apart during the match.

Brydon Carse – Five

Comparable to above, with added mustard of getting dominated by Travis Head.

Archer – 5

Appeared awesome with the ball initially and proved the top of a bad bunch in the second. Could still have an impact on the series.

Mark Wood – 5

Finished wicketless, yet massively commendable to even get on the field considering his absence.

Australian Team Individual Evaluations

Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer early on, then played his part in the sensational run chase.

Khawaja – Three

An unusual match. Did not look fit and spent time off the field. Took several important catches in the slips, but also seemed slow in the field. Gets a mark due to his injury that allowed Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – 7

A successful comeback to the side. Handled England's pressure more effectively than others initially, and supported Travis Head in the second.

Smith – 5

Seemed off form early on. Unnecessary pre-match comments on Monty Panesar.

Head – Nine

Perhaps unfair to not get a perfect score, but he attempted a pretty ropey stroke in the first innings. His second-innings century was an all-time great performance.

Cameron Green – 5

Took the crucial wicket of Ollie Pope early. Shaken by a Wood short ball when he batted. Hardly needed in the second half.

Carey – Five

Tried a counter-attack versus the English attack on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.

Starc – Nine

Carried the burden of the bowling without Cummins and Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes series 10-for in 20 years.

Scott Boland – Six

Short of his best in the first innings. Got better in the second to trigger the English batting collapse.

Brendan Doggett – 6

Steady first appearance. Quite able stand-in for Cummins and others.

Nathan Lyon – 2

Virtually a spectator in a match dominated by pace. Possibly suffered an injury after being hit by Mark Wood.
