Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives Nottingham Forest a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts the team in command.
  • Striker nets again with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • James McAtee rounds off a excellent display with a penalty.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the Europa League with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a place in the knockout round play-offs and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, even though they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident display will give Forest fans confidence that their side can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen did hit the upright with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

The forward's 11th came soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive step."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in European competition this term with six of his eleven strikes scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was observing this match from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent finishes and overall being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not alone in catching the eye, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

Such positive showings will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"James was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another two and these are good signs."
