Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
