LeBron James's Historic Point-Scoring Streak Ends, But Los Angeles Secure Triumph Over Toronto.

The Lakers star knew his historic streak of reaching double digits was at risk. In that crucial moment, however, he wasn't bothered.

The right decision meant distributing the rock – which is exactly what he did. With that selfless act, the unprecedented record finished.

LeBron's staggering streak of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season games with 10+ points ended this past Thursday, as basketball's greatest scorer finished with eight total points during the Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He delivered the game-winning assist, finding Rui Hachimura to hit a three-point shot to win the game.

“Nothing,” James said after being questioned on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”

A Selfless Play Delivers the Game

He might have tried to secure the game – and extended his record – in the closing seconds, instead, he decided to pass to his teammate in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, prompting James celebrated immediately.

It's about playing basketball correctly. You always make the correct play,” James noted. That is my M.O.. That is the way I was instructed to play. I've played that way throughout my career.”

“LeBron is fully cognizant exactly how many points he has at any point,” stated Lakers coach JJ Redick. “He did it just as he has countless times.”

The Run's Final Moments

He returned to the floor one last time at just over five minutes left, the win and his personal record both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had only six points from 3-of-15 shooting then.

He scored at 1:46 left to tie the game and missed a shot at 1:01 left which could have pushed him into double figures.

He passed up one more attempt – even though he had a chance. A teammate found him with a few seconds left, yet LeBron opted to dish it off instead.

The spirits of the game, when you play it correctly, they often repay you,” Redick stated.

A Look Back at a Monumental Streak

The record commenced back in January 2007. It was, by far the most extended such streak in NBA history: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run with 575.

He is such a pass-first superstar,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.

He simply plays hoops. The chance was there but given his nature as a player and his personality as an individual, he chose the pass, passed it to Rui and claimed the game.”

Getting to ten points had typically been a guarantee long before the final period. Over the course of the record, he had reached the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times coming into the contest.

However, two of those rare games below ten points through three quarters had happened just days before: He recorded nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks on 28 November, and then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.

James managed to preserve the record against the Suns. The very next outing, it was over – but he still rejoiced all the same.

My focus is to make the right play. That’s automatic, win, lose or draw,” James declared. “You make the smart play, the sports deities consistently returning the favor.”
