Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at Age 89.

The award-nominated performer Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us 89 years old.

This star, with filmography included National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, passed away at home in Ojai, California. Her passing was revealed in a statement shared by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who starred with Diane Ladd in a number of films like Rambling Rose, described her as “my amazing hero and my special gift being my mom”, noting that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the most wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist along with compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Beginnings and Major Success

The start of her career saw minor parts on television series including Perry Mason while the seventies saw her starring next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow plus funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a comedy program derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she was given a further Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she played the mother of her biological child the character played by Dern. A year later she received another nomination for her role in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred Laura Dern.

“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited me and Laura to the UK for a royal premiere and an event in our honor,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, and crying, seeing us act.”

The 1990s featured performances in humorous films The Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played the mother of Dern another time. The decade also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Working with Laura Dern

She continued to star with her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She additionally starred alongside actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her more recent television parts included Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Writing and Directing

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck that included Diane Ladd and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him in a movie. In fact, I’m the only woman in recorded history who directed her former husband. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”

Personal Connections

She happened to be a family member of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration on my life”.

In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery after her daughter shifted her to another medical facility.

“If you can take your pain and not let it back up like an injury, instead apply it to discover, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
