Martin Compston are set to reprise their roles in the acclaimed crime series

The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
